Sand T is the Founder and Director of artSPACE@16 Gallery in Malden. The mission of the gallery is to nurture contemporary art and encourage others in building an artistic community in Malden. It serves as a networking hub for fellow artists and the community at large, providing support and resources.

Sand T is an art consultant, exhibition curator and a participating artist. She has recently volunteered her expertise to the Arts Committee of the Asperger’s Association of New England, Window ARTS Malden 2006 and 13FORESTGallery. She was a grant recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council in 2006 and curated “Malden Contemporary" art exhibition at the Gallery at Elm Street.

In 2007, the Council awarded her a grant once again and she is currently organizing an exhibition entitled “the LOCALS:IV storyLINES.” Sand T was nominated for a Commonwealth Award for outstanding contributions to arts and culture in Massachusetts and was awarded a “Contemporary Work Fund” from LEF Foundation in 2006 and 2007. She has received many other awards and recognitions, all demonstrating the unique, multifaceted talents of this outstanding artist.

Sand T is known for her creative power, her artistic creations and her talented perspectives. She has built a forum where our community can be inspired and influenced by art. She has been creating and exhibiting her work both nationally and internationally for two decades. Her mediums are mixed media collage work, illuminated sculpture, and site specific art installations. Her expertise also includes media publicity, and community outreach.

The true measure of this artist is what others say about her. A responder to comments about Sand T wrote, “Sand T stands out as the most gracious and artist committed person that I have encountered. I cannot say enough about the positive atmosphere that she has created to bring a great variety of artists together.”

Sand T received a graduate degree from Tufts University/The Museum School in 1997 and moved to Malden in 2000 following her displacement from the artist community at Fort Point. Her collaboration with Mayor Howard and other community activists in 2002 created a citywide commitment to create an artist live/work space. This effort inspired 45 local artists and began a partnership resulting in new artist studios and retail galleries in Malden.

Sand T believes that “building a community is essential. It is the foundation on which to establish and nurture a professional artistic presence to benefit the arts and cultural life of Malden and the larger community.”

Her nominator, Deborah Burke, project director of the city of Malden, wrote about Sand T’s drive, confidence and spirit. She called her a “fireball of passion for artistic endeavors” who has been the “inspiration of fostering and growing the creative talents of many.”
